Copper Canyon Adventures

Fishing/Copper Canyon combo Itinerary

Day 1:

Bienvenidos a Mexico! Your arrival in Los Mochis, Sinaloa State, will be the start of your Mexican adventure. Please try to schedule your arriving flight into Los Mochis in the afternoon, if possible. Your trip guide will meet you at the airport (If you are arriving by means other than commercial aircraft, please advise and we will make the necessary arrangements to pick you up). You will then be taken to your hotel on Lake Dominguez, where, depending on your arrival time, you may be in time to enjoy a tremendous sunset over the lake with your dinner.

Meals included: Dinner

Day 2:

Lake Dominguez. Wake up in the morning to a wonderful lake view-and the chance to catch some Black Bass! Your first fishing trip leaves either before or after breakfast, depending on your preferences, while the second will be in the late afternoon. In between trips, relax by the lake and have a great lunch.

FOR THE NON-FISHERMAN: While the fisherman hit the lake, you can enjoy sightseeing, shopping and cultural exploration in El Fuerte, a very colonial and traditional town only 15 minutes from the lake. We will work out a schedule to fit your preferences, but here are the tours available for your enjoyment:

Handicrafts shopping tour

Mayo Indian village tour

El Fuerte city tour

Fuerte River bird watching

Petroglyph tour

Traditional medicine/medicinal plants workshop

Horseback riding

You can even take a tour of the lake, if you want!

Day 3:

For the fishermen, have another go at landing "the big one"! The record in Lake Dominguez is over 12 pounds, so good luck! For the non-fisherman, enjoy another day exploring in and around El Fuerte or enjoy the tranquility of the Hotel Villa Dominguez. It is up to you! As an added bonus, after dinner you will be treated to an exhibition of traditional dance and music.

Day 4:

After breakfast, you will be taken to the Chihuahua al Pacifico (Chihuahua to the Pacific-CHEPE) train station in El Fuerte. There you will meet the first-class train that will take you on one of the world's great train journeys-through dozens of tunnels and bridges, CHEPE is, even 40 years after its opening, an incredible feat of engineering in an awe-inspiring landscape.

The area around Temoris is especially impressive-there the train climbs the valley and even loops around itself before reaching the uppermost portion of the track high above the valley (it also passes close to the base of a high waterfall!):

A bar car is available on this train for relaxation and conversation. Upon our arrival in Bahuichivo in the afternoon, you will be taken to your hotel in Cerocahui-gateway to the unspoiled Copper Canyon.

There will be time after lunch for a two hour horseback ride in the beautiful area around the lodge, a hike to the "Cave of the Crosses", or just relaxing amidst the mountain scenery.

Dinner will be around a campfire, with spectacular views of the stars and planets available with a professional telescope.

Day 5:

Full day tour of Urique. Today we will travel to the bottom of the canyon for spectacular views and breathtaking panoramas. Be sure to bring your camera! Lunch will be in Urique, the country seat-originally a Spanish mining town. We will return to the lodge in late afternoon in time to clean up for dinner.

Day 6:

Your morning is free.

After lunch we will return to Bahuichivo for our return train ride to El Fuerte-and a great train sunset! Upon our return to El Fuerte, we will return to Lake Dominguez for our final two nights in Mexico.

Day 7:

For the fishermen, this will be your last full day on the lake. For the non-fisherman, today will be a great chance to return to El Fuerte to finish your shopping, enjoy the colonial architecture or try some of the local delicacies.

If there is still a tour you would like to do (or do again), just let us know and it will be arranged!

After breakfast, you will be taken to the airport at Los Mochis, where you will be assisted in checking in for your flight.

Our creed:

"Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to
relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate
nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that
promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for
beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations
(Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)".

(Note: We use the word Raramuri throughout as the most accurate name of the indigenous people of the Copper Canyon (what they call themselves, not the more commonly used "Tarahumara", which is actually a word the Spanish created))

Please note that while many of our trips start with your arrival in Los Mochis, we can modify ANY itinerary to start in El Paso or Chihuahua, if that is your preferred starting point.  Please note that because of the greater distances to many areas in the Copper Canyon from those two cities, itineraries which start from there may require more transportation time, and may be more expensive due to the increased transportation cost. These increased time and money costs may offset any benefits from lower airfares to these cities, but we will do what we can to keep your trip cost down.
