The incomparable

Copper Canyon

Near the bottom of the Urique Canyon near La Huerta

Because of it's majestic scenery, diverse human culture and world-famous train trip, the Copper Canyon is an inspiring and unforgettable destination. Welcome to the journey!

In the Temoris Valley on the First-Class train

All of our itineraries can start from any of the major Copper Canyon gateway cities: Los Mochis/El Fuerte (suggested due to proximity to the best rail scenery), and Chihuahua and El Paso (further from the best parts of the canyon)--please inquire if you do not see the gateway city you desire in the itineraries below.

We have recently experienced a tour of the fabulous Copper Canyons of northern Mexico under the skilled direction of Les Mahoney of Copper Canyon Adventures.

Across the years we have had the privilege of leading some 78 groups in many parts of the world but we have never been more carefully cared for or wisely directed.  From independent travel to group arrangements for senior citizens or active hikers, he knows what he is doing.

The accommodations were most acceptable, the care we received most thorough and the total experience a remarkable achievement.  There is no better way to see and experience the Copper Canyon.

I knew immediately, when I first was lucky enough to have made contact with Les from Copper Canyon Adventures, that this was the tour for us, and we hate tours! He was so perceptive about what we wanted, what we DIDN'T want, and what sort of people we were.

Because of that, our trip was exactly what we love, and more. The combination of the wonderful train trip (and that Canyon!), being picked up, dropped off and generally looked after and the wonderful hotels and homes we stayed in was perfect. Les even gave us fantastic advice about the rest of our trip in Mexico! We'll be back someday!"

I went through a lot of tour operators before I found you who refused to consider the idea of custom itineraries. I was told that the guides wouldn't speak English and they would have a bad trip if I didn't put my clients with a group.

Luckily I found you. I felt you had integrity and great skill. I will recommend you to my consortium of over a 100 agencies that I am a part of, called Leisure Travel group.

It means a lot to have a recommendation and our best clients want flexibility and independent travel where it is possible.

Thanks for understanding our needs!

Clover.gif (968 bytes)

Our daughters, ages 10, 8 and 5 especially enjoyed the ruggedness of our adventures in the Canyon.  While staying at the Oso they rode horses, went swimming in the river, crossed a suspension bridge, explored caves, and met a real Raramuri Indian family in their home.

We never dreamed that the Canyon would be so green - much prettier than the Grand Canyon.

We enjoyed the Mexican dance performance (put on just for us!).  Our hosts at the Paraiso del Oso and the Rio Fuerte Bed and Breakfast made us feel like part of their families.  Thank you again!

Clover.gif (968 bytes)

Our Copper Canyon trip will certainly be one of the highlights of all our hiking expeditions.

Part of the thanks goes to you and your perfect way of communication and talent in getting things organized. We are very glad that we didn't miss the Urique Canyon.

Thanks again and if we talk to our friends, we certainly would recommend they go to Copper Canyon and contact you.

What can I say?  We were impressed with CCA from beginning to end!

We picked your site from the many on the internet because:

bulletyour website was the most impressive and well-done
bulletyour links the best
bulletyou use only eco-friendly lodges
bulletit was easy to book and pay
bulletwe weren't stuck with set times and set itineraries
bulletyou made everything sound interesting and fun
bulletyour tours weren't as "tourist-y"
bulletthere were the backpack/horsepack options
bulletyour prices were the most competitive

We looked at several other choices, but chose to go with CCA over the other options we looked at because:

bulletyou were willing to work with us
bulletyou responded quickly to each & every e-mail
bulletyou answered all our questions
bulletyou gave us money-saving options, even though we didn't end up using them

And finally, the trip was everything we expected and more,  Some things that are really special about the way you do things:

bulletWelcome packet of magazines, Spanish guide, vouchers, train tickets, tip guidance, etc upon arrival
bulletSeats on the right side of the train
bulletYour other clients (Stan, Phyllis, Wade, Gail, Ken & Kay) were delightful - some have already contacted us by e-mail  (corollary:  all the best people use CCA)
bulletQuestionnaire before the trip - made us feel special

Would we use CCA again?  Without at doubt...I wouldn't even consider any other company.  You thought of EVERY detail - from beginning to end, that would make the trip what we wanted.  We were able to relax and enjoy everything.  I believe that we got the best service for the best price.

Quick Copper Canyon tips

(whether you travel with us or not):

Clover.gif (968 bytes)Start your Copper Canyon Adventure in El Fuerte. Not only do you get to visit a charming colonial town (instead of a big agricultural city), you do not have to get up at 4:30 am (or earlier) to catch the train!  We do not know how many times we have seen people with "Mochis" lag, sleeping thru the best part of the train trip because they had to leave way too early from Los Mochis.  Don't let it happen to you!  :)

Clover.gif (968 bytes) Consider summer travel to the Copper Canyon.  Temperatures are nice on the rim, and the entire area is beautifully green due to summer rains.  In addition, there are fewer other visitors around.

Clover.gif (968 bytes)Think about traveling with a guide.  While our independent journeys are comprehensive and flexible, there is no better way to learn about the canyon and its people and history than with a fully guided trip. The worst part about traveling somewhere new are the things you miss because you didn't even know they existed--our knowledgeable resident guides eliminate that risk.

Clover.gif (968 bytes)If you are considering travel to Batopilas, you might want to consider Urique instead.  It is also an historic mining town in a gorgeous canyon, and is less than two hours from Cerocahui.  We still like Batopilas, of course, but know that not everyone can afford the four days/three nights that is required to visit there due to its isolated location.

Have a great trip!

Our creed:

"Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to
relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate
nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that
promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for
beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations
(Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)".

(Note: We use the word Raramuri throughout as the most accurate name of the indigenous people of the Copper Canyon (what they call themselves, not the more commonly used "Tarahumara", which is actually a word the Spanish created))

Please note that while many of our trips start with your arrival in Los Mochis, we can modify ANY itinerary to start in El Paso or Chihuahua, if that is your preferred starting point.  Please note that because of the greater distances to many areas in the Copper Canyon from those two cities, itineraries which start from there may require more transportation time, and may be more expensive due to the increased transportation cost. These increased time and money costs may offset any benefits from lower airfares to these cities, but we will do what we can to keep your trip cost down.
