Sixteen members of an Adult Ed Spanish class in Santa Barbara California spent a week in the Copper Canyon in Mexico with a wonderful guide from Copper Canyon Adventures. We were pleasantly surprised at the level of luxury in which we traveled through this relatively remote area.  Every negotiation was well-planned in advance of our need. Our Spanish improved immensely and we were made aware of the treasures that the people and the land offer best to those who are informed.  Some of the comments from the participants of this trip:

------"I would certainly recommend this identical trip to other folks.  It was marvelous"!!! Terry

-----"I feel I got a lot for my money.  I'd love to do it again". Laurie

-----"Our guide was magnificent, I am newly inspired to study". Mary

We spent three nights on beautiful Lake Atitlan and went to small villages surrounding the lake by boat.   We saw colorful local markets, a women's weaving cooperative as well as a herb growing cooperative.  We visited two homes where the local people went to call upon a deity, Maximon, for improved health, trouble with a neighbor, debt relief, and prosperity among other requests.

A one hour flight to Tikal to see the Mayan culture which dates back centuries BC boggled the mind. We had two days there to challenge our imaginations with how this culture thrived and what happened to it.  Beautiful exotic birds were everywhere along with indigenous species of wildlife.  The coatimundi really put on a show for us.

We wanted for nothing.  We had two very knowledgeable English/Spanish speaking guides with us throughout the trip.  We had our own van and driver every day.  Every meal, entrance fee, all lodging and transportation while in Guatemala was provided.

Who wants to go to Guatemala on vacation?  Anybody.....especially me.  I have two more Maximon's to see!

Les, I just returned from my adventures with you in Copper Canyon Mexico -the Singles Group, and wanted you to know that that trip was one for the memory books for sure!!  I have never experienced such an enjoyable trip as this one and I have traveled the world over.

It wasn't just the fabulous scenery, the comfortable train rides, the wonderful weather, the great food - all that was there of course - but it was the promised adventure that came true.

But even more important to the trip were your guide services.  I want to thank you for being with us every step of the way, letting us know the culture of the area, the history of the area, the language and pricing expectations and all of the extra things you did to make our trip one for the memory books.

Thank you Les, and when you get your next trip scheduled - count me in!!

Our creed:

"Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to
relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate
nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that
promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for
beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations
(Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)".

(Note: We use the word Raramuri throughout as the most accurate name of the indigenous people of the Copper Canyon (what they call themselves, not the more commonly used "Tarahumara", which is actually a word the Spanish created))

Please note that while many of our trips start with your arrival in Los Mochis, we can modify ANY itinerary to start in El Paso or Chihuahua, if that is your preferred starting point.  Please note that because of the greater distances to many areas in the Copper Canyon from those two cities, itineraries which start from there may require more transportation time, and may be more expensive due to the increased transportation cost. These increased time and money costs may offset any benefits from lower airfares to these cities, but we will do what we can to keep your trip cost down.
