Copper Canyon Scholars

We at Copper Canyon Adventures are proud to support students in the Copper Canyon by both sponsoring students, and inviting others to help as well

Mary with Josefina (a new sponsor and a new scholarship recipient!)

We at CCA are very proud to be involved in a special program to help impoverished students in the Copper Canyon region continue their education thru low-cost, high payoff scholarships.

The cost of these scholarships ranges from $150 USD per year for a Middle School/Junior High School student, to $200 per year for a High School student.  Once initiated, these scholarships are administered by the local Parish, which disburses funds as needed directly to the student for supplies and tuition--the student must produce receipts for all purchases and expenditures to guarantee that all funds are used for education only.

Important--100% of the scholarship funds go to education--there are NO administrative costs!

Donors have the choice of which of the available students they wish to sponsor, and may begin a correspondence with the student.  In addition, we can arrange for you to visit your sponsored student in the Copper Canyon, if you wish.

The following student requires sponsorship--can you help?

Hector Genaro Moreno Salmeron

(from his application)

TRANSLATION

I am 13 years old and live in a small village called Segorachi.  I am studying in the second year of secondary school in the distance secondary school of Cerocahui. I have four siblings, one of whom is a twin with me.  My mom works in a rural clinic, and my father is not with us.

They pay my mom very little, and it does not stretch to give us what we need for school, seeing how all of us go to school, my older sister in high school, my twin and i in secondary school, and our younger sisters in primary school.

I like to study alot, but i also like my village, and every weekend i go there.

With this letter i ask for your help to be able to continue with my studies.  I very much appreciate any help you can provide me.

The following students are already being sponsored by Copper Canyon Adventures:

Maria Angelina Ortega Lopez

Angelina is 14 years old and goes to Middle School in Cerocahui, although her family lives in Segorachi (due to the long distances involved, many students live far from their families to be able to attend school).

She has one brother and one sister, and asked for a scholarship because her family has little money for schooling due to the scarcity of jobs in the region.  Angelina is a good student, and likes to study when she is not in school.

Laura Ortega Lopez

Laura goes to Secondary/High School in Cerocahui, although her family lives in Baragomachi, several hours away.  As there are no upper level schools in Baragomachi, she is forced to go to school in Cerocahui, where she lives with her grandmother (she formerly was a boarding school student in Urique).

Fifteen years old, Laura's father is a farmer, and her mother is a housewife. She has six brothers and sisters, three of whom are attending school--all of them recognize that education is the best way for them to improve their lives, and Laura asked for a scholarship to be able to continue that education.  Laura likes to study and also participate in cultural and sporting events at school.

The following students are being sponsored by several generous CCA alumnus:

Maria Antonia Murillo Perez

Maria is 14 years old and is attending Middle School in Cerocahui and very much wants to continue to do well in her studies, in part to make her parents proud of her.  Of five children in her family, Maria is the only girl, and is also the oldest child.  She likes to play with her brothers although sometimes they fight alot!

She will use her scholarship to continue her studies, as her father is often without work, and they have no money for school supplies and registration fees. Maria is a good student and has an excellent attendance record.

Jose Adrian Salmeron Patino

Jose, eleven years old, just finished Primary/Elementary School and is now in the first year of Middle School/Junior High, and asks for sponsorship because he does not think his family will be able to pay for the increased school supplies or new clothes he will need as he continues his studies.

Jose lives in Cerocahui with his mother, who works when their is employment--Jose's father does not live with them, and often his mother's wages are barely enough to keep the family fed. He hopes the help of God, and his scholarship, will give him the luck he needs to improve his life thru education.

Efrain Moreno Estrada

Fourteen years old and just began Middle School in Cerocahui, Efrain has three brothers and five sisters, and asked for a scholarship to be able to continue in school.

Julia Guadalupe Felix Molina

Julia is 13 years old and lives in Cerocahui with her parents and four brothers and sisters.

She is now in the second year of Junior High (secundaria) and gets outstanding grades. She asked for a beca (scholarship) because there is little work in Cerocahui, and while her father does what he can, it is barely enough for food and necessities.

She thanks God for the help her CCA alumnus has given her, and sends her, and her families, sincere appreciation.

Isela Perez Requejo

Isela is in the second year of Junior High (secundaria), gets excellent grades, and has three brothers.  She asked for sponsorship because her father can't work, and her mother is sick.

She sends her affection and appreciation out to her sponsor, a kind CCA client.

Carmen Abigail Concheno Requejo

She is 15 years old and is in her last year of secundaria (Junior High) in Cerocahui. Carmen lives close to Cerocahui, in a beautiful area known as Tascate, starting point for many great hikes in the region.

Carmen's father died four years ago, leaving her mother and four brothers and sisters with few resources to pay for school.  Her and her family greatly appreciate the support she has received thru our student sponsorship program.

Guadalupe Renteria Moreno

Guadalupe is thirteen years old and just began the second year of Junior High (secundaria) in Cerocahui. Guadalupe has four brothers and sisters, but his father no longer lives with the family, and his mother barely makes enough to feed the family.

Like many students attending school in Cerocahui, Guadalupe's family does not live there, but in the small mountain village of Basigochi, located in one of the most impoverished areas in the central Sierra. Guadalupe stays with family and friends in Cerocahui when attending school, and returns home occasionally (a four hour walk) to see his mother and brothers and sisters.

Guadalupe is a good student, and he excels in Spanish, geography and biology.

He very much wants to continue his schooling, and trusts in God that he will receive the scholarship he needs to do so.

Jose Fernando Arcubia Ortega

Jose is 11 years old and is from the Raramuri ceremonial center of Guadalupe Coronado, but lives far from there in Cerocahui with his grandmother.

He is in the first year of telesecundaria (television Junior High), where his best subjects are Raramuri language and civics.

Jose asked for help in supporting him so that he may continue his education, as his parents are very poor, and his grandmother has very little, although she helps however she can.

Our creed:

"Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to
relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate
nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that
promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for
beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations
(Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)".

(Note: We use the word Raramuri throughout as the most accurate name of the indigenous people of the Copper Canyon (what they call themselves, not the more commonly used "Tarahumara", which is actually a word the Spanish created))

Please note that while many of our trips start with your arrival in Los Mochis, we can modify ANY itinerary to start in El Paso or Chihuahua, if that is your preferred starting point.  Please note that because of the greater distances to many areas in the Copper Canyon from those two cities, itineraries which start from there may require more transportation time, and may be more expensive due to the increased transportation cost. These increased time and money costs may offset any benefits from lower airfares to these cities, but we will do what we can to keep your trip cost down.
