A little shorter than our other trips, the Copper Canyon "Vista" ("view" in Spanish) gives you the opportunity to see lots of the canyon region in a short period.

When does this trip depart?  When YOU want it to! Just let us know what dates are best for you--we work on your calendar, not ours!

Copper Canyon Adventures

"Vista" trip itinerary

Day 1:

Arrival.

You will be met at the airport in Los Mochis and taken to colonial El Fuerte, a trip of about 1 1/2 hours on a good road.

You will enjoy welcome cocktails/beverages at the Hotel El Fuerte, an island of comfort and seclusion only a block from the heart of El Fuerte. Beautiful and attentive, staying at the Hotel El Fuerte is like stepping back in time to the days of old Mexico.

To complement this wonderful hotel, take a stroll after dinner to the "Plazuela" of El Fuerte, a short distance away. This wonderfully maintained central plaza is indicative of both the pride of El Fuerte’s citizens and the richness of their history.

Meals included: Dinner

Day 2:

El Fuerte.

After breakfast, you will enjoy a float down the Fuerte River, enjoying great bird watching as well as exploring the mysterious petroglyphs at the "Cerro de la Mascara" (Mask Hill).

This afternoon will feature traditional Sinaloan cuisine served in a tremendous natural setting on the Fuerte River. Ocolomito is a wonderful spot to spend the afternoon, whether you enjoy bird watching, the natural beauty of the Fuerte River or just plan relaxing in a tranquil setting with great food.

Later, enjoy sunset on Lake Dominguez as you take a boat excursion at this beautiful spot.

Dinner will be served at your hotel with special entertainment to finish off a very special day.

Day 3:

The Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad.

You have reserved seats on the Copper Canyon train after breakfast today, enjoying tremendous views from one of the most scenic train rides in the world. The three-level loop at Temoris is especially photogenic.

Along the way, you will also enjoy views of mountain towns like Aguacaliente de Lamphar and Irigoyen and high bridges such as the one that crosses the Rio Chinipas.

Approaching Lake Huites

Your destination today is Bahuichivo, the station serving the small community of Cerocahui.

Members of the Paraiso del Oso Ranch, your lodging for the next two nights, will meet you at the station. Tranquil and refreshing, I am sure you will enjoy the warm, comfortable rooms at the Paraiso del Oso—with kerosene lamps, plush comforters and pillows, you will certainly feel pampered.

Time permitting this afternoon, you will visit the "Cave of the Crosses", an interesting former cave dwelling of the Raramuri Indians.

Finally, enjoy happy hour (with "industrial strength" margaritas, if you wish!) and dinner in the dining room.

Day 4:

Cerocahui, Cerro Gallegos and Urique.

After breakfast you will travel to Cerocahui, one of the oldest mountain communities in the Sierra. Cerocahui is also home to one of the oldest (and prettiest) churches in the region—a church with a surprising Asian connection.

From Cerocahui, you will travel past the Mesa del Arturo before enjoying great views of both the Palestine and Urique Canyons, and Raramuri Indian homesteads from Cerro Gallegos. The views of the canyon from Cerro Gallegos are truly epic and justifiably famous.

At Cerro Gallegos

A highlight of this excursion will be your descent to the floor of the second deepest canyon in North America (deeper than the Grand Canyon)—the road is unforgettable. You will lunch in Urique, one of the oldest mining towns in the Sierra, and also have time to explore this unique town—and a nearby suspension bridge that crosses the Urique River.

Leaving the canyon will provide still more great photo opportunities, especially with the different sun angles of the afternoon. You will never forget the panoramas of the Urique Canyon.

You will arrive back at the ranch in time to clean up and relax before dinner—where I am sure conversation will be lively after the day’s travels.

Day 5:

The Paraiso del Oso and railroad.

You will have the morning to explore around the lodge. Optional excursions include hiking and horseback riding for skill levels from novice to advanced. Another great option is relaxing in the garden of the lodge. It is up to you!

After lunch you will return to Bahuichivo to catch sunset views from the train on the way back to El Fuerte. In El Fuerte, you will be taken to the Hotel El Fuerte for your farewell dinner.

Day 6:

Departure.

After breakfast you will be taken to the airport in Los Mochis, where our representatives will assist you in checking in for your flight.

Our creed:

"Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to
relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate
nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that
promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for
beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations
(Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)".

(Note: We use the word Raramuri throughout as the most accurate name of the indigenous people of the Copper Canyon (what they call themselves, not the more commonly used "Tarahumara", which is actually a word the Spanish created))

Please note that while many of our trips start with your arrival in Los Mochis, we can modify ANY itinerary to start in El Paso or Chihuahua, if that is your preferred starting point.  Please note that because of the greater distances to many areas in the Copper Canyon from those two cities, itineraries which start from there may require more transportation time, and may be more expensive due to the increased transportation cost. These increased time and money costs may offset any benefits from lower airfares to these cities, but we will do what we can to keep your trip cost down.
