One of the great fringe benefits to living in El
Fuerte is the incredible food we have here--with wonderful Mexican dishes, beef, pork,
bass, prawns and shrimp, it is truly a non-stop feast.
Since so many of our clients have commented on the
quality of the food, we figured we would create an itinerary built around eating--it is a
tough job, but someone has to do it!
For each day you spend in El Fuerte on the
"Great Food Itinerary", you will enjoy a tasty breakfast at your hotel and lunch
and dinner on the town. Here are some of the dishes you may choose to sample:
The "Mariscada": a combination
platter with bass cooked three different ways, two types of shrimp and fresh-cooked
prawns--muy rico!
Tacos de carne asada: the best grilled beef you
can imagine, with fresh corn or flour tortillas, onions, lettuce, radishes (on the side),
and at least four different kinds of salsa.
Lobina al mojo de ajo: Fresh black bass cooked
with butter and garlic. If you have never had lobina, get ready for a taste treat.
"Papas": Baked potatoes smothered
with white cheese, onions and grilled beef. Accompanied by fresh tortillas and
vegetables and a variety of salsas, this simple, hearty dish always satisfies.
Sopa "Azteca": Right here and right
now we lay claim to the best Tortilla Soup on the planet--with avocado, sour cream and
chipotle chiles, this soup is a meal in itself.
Shrimp cocktail: Fresh jumbo shrimp
served with lime, salsa and onions. Eat with "totopos" (tortilla chips) for a
great lunch. "Cocteles" are also available with lobina, mojarra (perch),
pulpo (octopus) and with combinations of all of the above.
"Gorditas" (Little fat ones): Fried
thick tortillas covered with refried beans, shredded beef, lettuce, onions, grated cheese
and tomatoes and served with beef broth for additional flavor. This is truly a taste
of Mexico.
and the list can go on and on! (you can even go
vegetarian, if you like)
NOTE: For those of
you out there afraid of the food being too spicy, let us assure you that all the spicy
stuff is served on the side for you to add according to your preference. Have no fear!
And, of course, there is plenty to do in El Fuerte besides just eat.
There is great bird watching, shopping, history, colonial architecture, river walking,
resting between meals, petroglyphs, fishing, hanging out in the central plaza, etc...
