              Great Food in El Fuerte

One of the great fringe benefits to living in El Fuerte is the incredible food we have here--with wonderful Mexican dishes, beef, pork, bass, prawns and shrimp, it is truly a non-stop feast.

Since so many of our clients have commented on the quality of the food, we figured we would create an itinerary built around eating--it is a tough job, but someone has to do it!

For each day you spend in El Fuerte on the "Great Food Itinerary", you will enjoy a tasty breakfast at your hotel and lunch and dinner on the town.  Here are some of the dishes you may choose to sample:

The "Mariscada": a combination platter with bass cooked three different ways, two types of shrimp and fresh-cooked prawns--muy rico!

Tacos de carne asada: the best grilled beef you can imagine, with fresh corn or flour tortillas, onions, lettuce, radishes (on the side), and at least four different kinds of salsa.

Lobina al mojo de ajo: Fresh black bass cooked with butter and garlic. If you have never had lobina, get ready for a taste treat.

"Papas": Baked potatoes smothered with white cheese, onions and grilled beef.  Accompanied by fresh tortillas and vegetables and a variety of salsas, this simple, hearty dish always satisfies.

Sopa "Azteca": Right here and right now we lay claim to the best Tortilla Soup on the planet--with avocado, sour cream and chipotle chiles, this soup is a meal in itself.

Shrimp cocktail:  Fresh jumbo shrimp served with lime, salsa and onions. Eat with "totopos" (tortilla chips) for a great lunch.  "Cocteles" are also available with lobina, mojarra (perch), pulpo (octopus) and with combinations of all of the above.

"Gorditas" (Little fat ones): Fried thick tortillas covered with refried beans, shredded beef, lettuce, onions, grated cheese and tomatoes and served with beef broth for additional flavor.  This is truly a taste of Mexico.

and the list can go on and on! (you can even go vegetarian, if you like)

NOTE: For those of you out there afraid of the food being too spicy, let us assure you that all the spicy stuff is served on the side for you to add according to your preference. Have no fear!

And, of course, there is plenty to do in El Fuerte besides just eat.   There is great bird watching, shopping, history, colonial architecture, river walking, resting between meals, petroglyphs, fishing, hanging out in the central plaza, etc...

A two-night stay on the "great food itinerary" includes:

Two nights lodging with full breakfasts both days,

Two lunches (one on the river) and two dinners per person (one appetizer, one main dish and one dessert),

At least one beverage included per person, per meal (alcoholic or otherwise),

A city tour of colonial El Fuerte (437 years young!),

All necessary transfers, including from and to the airport in Los Mochis, and

Our personal recommendations on the best places to eat--we will even join you, if you'd like (we like to eat too!).

Price:

$295 per person, double occupancy ($215 per person if you do not need transportation to and from Los Mochis)

Not included in trip price:

Bottles of wine,

Food ordered for take out,

Tips to drivers or hotel and restaurant staff

BUEN PROVECHO!

(Bon appetit', in other words)

The "Great Food Itinerary" can also be enjoyed in conjunction with any of our trips to the Copper Canyon--just ask!

Our creed:

"Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to
relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate
nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that
promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for
beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations
(Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)".

(Note: We use the word Raramuri throughout as the most accurate name of the indigenous people of the Copper Canyon (what they call themselves, not the more commonly used "Tarahumara", which is actually a word the Spanish created))

Please note that while many of our trips start with your arrival in Los Mochis, we can modify ANY itinerary to start in El Paso or Chihuahua, if that is your preferred starting point.  Please note that because of the greater distances to many areas in the Copper Canyon from those two cities, itineraries which start from there may require more transportation time, and may be more expensive due to the increased transportation cost. These increased time and money costs may offset any benefits from lower airfares to these cities, but we will do what we can to keep your trip cost down.
