Guided or Independent?

The three most important differences between our guided and independent journeys are:

First,

You will learn more about the Chihuahua al Pacifico train and the natural and cultural history of the Copper Canyon on a fully guided trip than on an independent journey. In addition, you are more likely to visit areas and people you might not otherwise had even known about—people and places that are the true hidden treasures of the Copper Canyon.

Second,

Your guide will also overcome whatever language barrier might exist between yourself and the people with whom you want to interact. English is not widely spoken in the canyon region, and having a bilingual guide is invaluable to fully enjoying your trip.

Third,

Your guide on a fully guided trip is there to make sure your vacation proceeds exactly as you want it to--he or she is not there to "herd you around" or make you follow some rigid itinerary, but rather to act as a facilitator to ensure your trip is great!

Regardless of whether you choose a fully guided or independent journey, you will have the comfort of having a customized trip where all the details (reservations, train tickets, etc.) have already been arranged and confirmed.

Either trip option is a good one, depending on your personality, vacation goals and budget.

Our creed:

"Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to
relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate
nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that
promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for
beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations
(Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)".

(Note: We use the word Raramuri throughout as the most accurate name of the indigenous people of the Copper Canyon (what they call themselves, not the more commonly used "Tarahumara", which is actually a word the Spanish created))

Please note that while many of our trips start with your arrival in Los Mochis, we can modify ANY itinerary to start in El Paso or Chihuahua, if that is your preferred starting point.  Please note that because of the greater distances to many areas in the Copper Canyon from those two cities, itineraries which start from there may require more transportation time, and may be more expensive due to the increased transportation cost. These increased time and money costs may offset any benefits from lower airfares to these cities, but we will do what we can to keep your trip cost down.
