Helping students in

Mexico's Copper Canyon and Guatemala

Our Copper Canyon Scholar program helps students with low-cost, zero administrative fee scholarships. Isela is just one of many students who are still in school in the Copper Canyon because of this program.                   CCA is proud to help students in Guatemala through the purchase of school supplies and school registration help.

Copper Canyon Scholars Guatemala students

As part of our commitment to "give back" to the communities in which we live and work, we are very proud to be involved in special programs to help impoverished students in the Copper Canyon and Guatemala continue their education thru low-cost, high payoff scholarships and direct donations of school supplies and cash to purchase such supplies.

In the Copper Canyon, this assistance is thru scholarships which range from $150 USD per year for a Middle School/Junior High School student, to $200 per year for a High School student.  Once initiated, these scholarships are administered by the local Parish, which disburses funds as needed directly to the student for supplies and tuition--the student must produce receipts for all purchases and expenditures to guarantee that all funds are used for education only.

Important--100% of the scholarship funds go to education--there are NO administrative costs!

Donors have the choice of which of the available students they wish to sponsor, and may begin a correspondence with the student.  In addition, we can arrange for you to visit your sponsored student in the Copper Canyon, if you wish.

In Guatemala, our assistance takes the form of school supplies purchased from your donations, and also direct support of at-risk youth in Guatemala City's most impoverished neighborhoods, where running water is nonexistent, gangs are rife, and drugs and violence threatens to sap the spirit of these young children.  Once again, 100% of your donation goes to support--there are no administrative costs, and you are invited to visit the students you are helping.

The cost of paper, pencils, school registration, notebooks, etc, is so very little compared with the cost of these students being unable to continue down their educational path. We ask you to take a look at these programs, and hope you can help us help the young lives of these talented students.

Our creed:

"Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to
relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate
nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that
promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for
beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations
(Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)".

(Note: We use the word Raramuri throughout as the most accurate name of the indigenous people of the Copper Canyon (what they call themselves, not the more commonly used "Tarahumara", which is actually a word the Spanish created))

Please note that while many of our trips start with your arrival in Los Mochis, we can modify ANY itinerary to start in El Paso or Chihuahua, if that is your preferred starting point.  Please note that because of the greater distances to many areas in the Copper Canyon from those two cities, itineraries which start from there may require more transportation time, and may be more expensive due to the increased transportation cost. These increased time and money costs may offset any benefits from lower airfares to these cities, but we will do what we can to keep your trip cost down.
