    Four sample Custom Itineraries

Enjoying the overlook at Cerro Gallegos

To give you a better idea of the many different kinds of trips available to you, we have listed here just four that we have designed for visitors in the past from their "Create A Trip" requests.

Comfortable touring (history and culture emphasis)

Birding and Natural history

Day hiking

"The Grand Tour"

And these are just a small sampling of what we can do in the Copper Canyon--in other words, if there is something you want to do in the Canyon, we can arrange it!

Note: the prices of these itineraries depends on how many people are traveling, whether you want one of our knowledgeable guides to accompany you, etc...but just let us know the specifics of your group by email, and we can give you a quote--quick!

Comfortable Touring (cultural and history emphasis)

(please also see our "Railroad Buff Trip" and our "Two BIG Canyons Itinerary")

In front of the train map at the Hoyancos Station (El Fuerte)

8 days/7 nights:

Features:

Folkloric dance show in El Fuerte,

River float to Cerro de la Mascara Petroglyphs,

Colonial El Fuerte city tour,

The best part of the train ride leaving at the best time of day!

A full-day excursion to Cerocahui, Cerro Gallegos (considered the best canyon rim overlook in the Copper Canyon area) and the old gold mining town of Urique, located in the bottom of the deepest canyon here,

A full-day excursion to Creel, with all it's interesting Raramuri -related cultural and natural history site (and the best part is you still stay near the canyon rim),

The "Three Canyons" canyon rim excursion (by vehicle).

Birding/Natural history

"The Island" near El Mahone

7 days/6 nights:

Features:

River trip to El Mahone and "the island", an amazing rookery of hundreds of birds and numerous species near El Fuerte,

Boat trip on Lake Dominguez for flat water birding,

Riverside lunch at Ocolomita, a great place for natural history observations,

Birding walks at four different places in the canyon area,

Sunset hummingbird observation near the canyon rim,

A half-day excursion to Cerro Gallegos, a canyon rim overlook where we sometimes see Military Macaws, and Elegant Trogons, amongst other birds.

Great day hiking

(for trekking or backpacking, see also our "Easter with the Raramuri Trek" and our "Urique Canyon Exploration Trip")

A moment of calm reflection on the Gallegos return hike....

8 days/7 nights:

Some highlights (many options are possible):

Hiking the "Cave Tour", a fascinating exploration of several old Raramuri cave dwellings, complete with archaeological artifacts and that special "see how they lived" feeling,

Returning to the Paraiso del Oso hotel hiking from Cerro Gallegos, a full-day hike that takes you into the depths of Raramuri country, for a better understanding of how they live in the canyon area,

A full-day descent to the village of Wakajipare, a small Raramuri pueblito halfway down into the canyon--steep down and up, this hike is very rewarding for its panoramic natural and cultural views.

"The Grand Tour"

13 days/12 nights:

Features:

See ALL the major sites in the Copper Canyon:

El Fuerte, Urique, Cerro Gallegos, Divisadero, Piedra Volada, Creel, Basaseachi Falls, Batopilas....all in one trip!

Whatever kind of trip you want, just let us know--designing trips for you is our specialty!

Our creed:

"Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to
relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate
nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that
promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for
beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations
(Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)".

(Note: We use the word Raramuri throughout as the most accurate name of the indigenous people of the Copper Canyon (what they call themselves, not the more commonly used "Tarahumara", which is actually a word the Spanish created))

Please note that while many of our trips start with your arrival in Los Mochis, we can modify ANY itinerary to start in El Paso or Chihuahua, if that is your preferred starting point.  Please note that because of the greater distances to many areas in the Copper Canyon from those two cities, itineraries which start from there may require more transportation time, and may be more expensive due to the increased transportation cost. These increased time and money costs may offset any benefits from lower airfares to these cities, but we will do what we can to keep your trip cost down.
