Copper Canyon

Multiday Treks

    The Urique Canyon

Great trails, panoramic views and friendly Raramuri and Mestizo hosts makes these classic treks deep into the heart of the Sierra Tarahumara.

In addition to our scheduled departures, these unique trips begin on a date to fit your schedule--just let us know when you want to enjoy a great trip!  It is that simple.

A note about hiking distances in the Copper Canyon.  Due to the rough and bisected terrain here, the best measure of distance between places is the time it takes to make the trip, since miles/kilometer measurements do not accurately reflect the difficulty of hiking here.  While in some places you can expect to hike up to 2 miles/3.7 kilometers per hour, the average pace in the terrain of the Copper Canyon is closer to 1 mile/1.8 kilometers per hour.

While priced below as a trek (hiking with a packhorse carrying the heavy stuff), this trip can also be done as a horseback ride or backpack--just let us know what you are interested in.

To see more pictures from this trip, check out our Gallery.

For a similar trek over Easter, filled with Raramuri ceremonies and pageantry, please see our "Easter with the Raramuri" itinerary.

Full details on our treks to Batopilas available soon!

Copper Canyon Adventures

Urique Canyon Trek:

trip itinerary

Day 1:

You will be met at Los Mochis and driven to colonial El Fuerte, about two hours away.  There you will settle in at the Hotel El Fuerte, a lovely and historic hotel very close to the central plaza. Welcome!

Overnight (ON) @ Hotel El Fuerte

Meals included: Dinner.

Day 2:

First-class train to Bahuichivo, featuring the most spectacular portion of the train ride, including the Septentrion Gorge and the loops at Temoris. On arrival, transfer to the Hotel Paraiso del Oso—a great location for scenic walks and exploration.

The Cave of the Crosses

Time permitting, hike this afternoon to the "Cave of the Crosses", once the home of Raramuri Indians.  Well-preserved and striking, this cave will give you an idea of one way the indigenous peoples of this area live.

ON @ Oso.

Day 3:  The trek begins--to Huicorachi

After breakfast, you will begin what is likely the most unique trip in the Copper Canyon area—the three-day descent into the Urique Canyon.

Hiking and riding on trails established centuries ago by the Raramuri, and then the Spaniards, you will discover a hidden side of the Copper Canyon, with remote villages, farms and Raramuri Indians living as they always have.

El Cajon sml.jpg (48237 bytes)

El Cajon

It will be a memorable experience for many reasons-for the panoramic views (such as El Cajon) and for the great trails, of course, but most of all for the interesting people you will meet.

Cristina and Dona Naty at Huicorachi

This is especially true in Huicorachi, home to one of our favorite canyon vistas, but more importantly, to our friend Dona Naty, A Raramuri lady who is our host at her home (the fields nearby are our campsite). Friendly and outgoing, chatting with Dona Naty will be a highlight for you due to her warmth and down-to-earth nature.

(Hiking time and distance today: 5.9 miles/10.9 km -- 4 - 6 hours (depending on group pace and trail conditions; total elevation change (both up and down): 1735'/530m)

BLD

Day 4: Descending the Arroyo Hondo to Naranjo

The view from Arroyo Hondo

Leaving Huicorachi after breakfast, we will steeply descend the Arroyo Hondo, enjoying two nice spots along the river for snacks, swimming and lunch. Along the way, there will be dramatic views of the Arroyo and the Urique Canyon in the distance.

Naranjo

After a swim at Arroyo Hondo, you will arrive in Naranjo, an incredibly beautiful farming village surrounded on three sides by canyon walls, late in the afternoon. There you will camp in the orchard of the Mancinas family, with whom you will also dine. Breaking bread with this lovely, warm family will be one of the highlights of your Copper Canyon Adventure, as will the seasonal fresh fruit from the orchard.

(Hiking time and distance today: 4.4 miles/8.1 km -- 5-7 hours; elevation change (mostly downhill!): 2958'/901m)

BLD

Day 5: To Urique and return to the Oso

Old mill and canyon walls below Naranjo

After a leisurely breakfast with Meleton and his family, we will continue our descent to the bottom of a canyon deeper than the Grand Canyon, arriving in the old mining town of Urique for lunch.

After lunch, you will return by vehicle to the Oso, marveling at the views from Cerro Gallegos and looking back on the trail you were just on.

(Approx hiking today: 3 miles/4.8 km--3 hours; elevation change: 1958'/596m)

BLD

Day 6:

You will have the morning free to explore around the Oso, before leaving after lunch to catch the train to colonial El Fuerte, arriving early enough to enjoy dinner there and stroll around the marvelous central plaza. Overnight at the Hotel El Fuerte.

Our creed:

"Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to
relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate
nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present) that
promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for
beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations
(Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, IUCN, 1996)".

(Note: We use the word Raramuri throughout as the most accurate name of the indigenous people of the Copper Canyon (what they call themselves, not the more commonly used "Tarahumara", which is actually a word the Spanish created))

Please note that while many of our trips start with your arrival in Los Mochis, we can modify ANY itinerary to start in El Paso or Chihuahua, if that is your preferred starting point.  Please note that because of the greater distances to many areas in the Copper Canyon from those two cities, itineraries which start from there may require more transportation time, and may be more expensive due to the increased transportation cost. These increased time and money costs may offset any benefits from lower airfares to these cities, but we will do what we can to keep your trip cost down.
