Independent trip "Overlooks"  March 12-17

March 12/Day 1: Arrival – El Fuerte

You will be met in Los Mochis by a representative of CCA and driven to colonial El Fuerte, about 1 1⁄2 hours away.

There you will settle in at the Hotel Mansion El Serrano, a lovely value hotel very close to the central plaza. Welcome!   

Overnight (ON) @ Hotel Mansion El Serrano. (or equivalent)

March 13/Day 2: The world-famous Chihuahua al Pacifico train – Areponapuchi (Divisadero area)

First-class train to Posada Barrancas, featuring the most spectacular portion of the train ride, including the Septentrion Gorge and the loops at Temoris.

Enjoy lunch on the train (on your own) with some of the best rail scenery in the world outside your window.

On arrival, transfer to the Hotel Mansion Tarahumara, located right on the canyon rim for great walks and exploration.

In fact, you should have time this afternoon for a nice walk along the rim.

March 14/Day 3: Full Day Creel area tour

Today you enjoy a full-day tour of Creel and its surrounding historical, cultural and natural sites.  The ride there allows you to see the Oteros canyon overlook and some of the areas you can visit today include the Tarahumara (Raramuri) Museum, Raramuri cave dwellings, Valley of the Mushrooms, lovely Lake Arareko, and the historic San Ignacio Mission, one of the oldest in the Sierra. 

 Time permitting, you can also visit the Mision Store, where are the proceeds support Tarahumara health care programs and possibly visit the Tarahumara Children’s Hospital, the only medical facility dedicated to helping the Tarahumara, and a cause Copper Canyon Adventures is proud to support.

You will spend tonight in Creel at the Plaza Mexicana, located right in the center of town.

Note: You can stop by the intersection of the 3 Canyons at Divisadero before heading to Creel.  You will not be going to the Adventure Park, but you will see great vistas of three canyons-Urique, Copper and Tararecua-from overlooks at "Piedra Volada" (Flying Rock), with its spectacular overlook and moving stone, and Divisadero, an amazing overlook, the halfway point of the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad, and home to an open-air Raramuri Indian artisan's market.

 

March 15/Day 4: Creel train to Bahuichivo, transfer to Cerocahui

 Relax and enjoy your morning in Creel, before you will catch the westbound first-class train, at 11am, to Bahuichivo. There you will be met and taken to the Hotel Paraiso del Oso, a fine lodge situated in a picturesque mountain valley in the Cerocahui region.

Time permitting; take a short hike to the “Cave of the Crosses” an interesting and anthropologically significant former Raramuri cave dwelling.

March 16/Day 5:  Half Day to Cerocahui and Cerro Gallegos overlook – Train to El Fuerte Second Time

Enjoy a half-day excursion to Cerocahui, home of one of the prettiest churches in the Sierra and Cerro Gallegos, perhaps the finest overlook in the Copper Canyon. The views, and the drive, are amazing!  

Along the way, if you wish, you can stop at two different schools and donate school supplies you have brought with you.

PM: First-class train to El Fuerte, enjoying the best part of the train ride a second time—this time with the warm sun angles of late afternoon.

On arrival, transfer to the Hotel Mansion Serrano, your home away from home in the Copper Canyon.
